Some in the "blogosphere" (I hate that word) are saying this is a ploy by the company to get press coverage, but believe me, it's not. I have no idea what type of button makes a good story and seeing a gaffe like this on MSNBC and major newspapers across the country isn't exactly in a standard business plan. So how should this be handled?
A public apology? Administrative action? Ignoring the issue?
No.
How about a simple press release?
Tthe following, an almost note-for-note copy of Craig's press release after "Stance Gate" was sent out to major news outlets who were starting to pick up on the story.
Tigereye Design responds to “Larry” mix-up.
GREENVILLE, OHIO, JULY 28, 2008 - First, let us apologize to the Larry LaRocco campaign for the dark cloud we have placed over their efforts. This entire episode is a distraction from the real issues that matter to Idaho voters, and for that we are sorry.
We did nothing wrong in the design of the Barack Obama button that mistakenly featured a photo of Larry Craig. When our designer sat down to make this button, he positioned his mouse pointer over a photo of Larry LaRocco. This particular designer uses a fairly wide pointer arrow, which may have been in contact with a photo of Larry Craig. A visual aid has been attached to this press release to illustrate our assertion that we are not at fault.
Let us be clear: We do not stand behind Larry Craig, and never have.
Our company has served thousands of Democratic campaigns nationwide and has accomplished a lot over the years for the Democratic Party. We hope that you will allow us to continue to do that. There are still goals we’d like to accomplish in this election, and we believe we can still be one of the nation’s most prolific button makers.
